So, what is an elopement?

What is an Elopement?

It’s metaphysical. Your union is sacred. I think we live in a world that sadly doesn’t value or treasure these moments and I truly believe they matter more than we think. That’s why I do what I do. I want to create treasure. Pieces that you can look back on and feel what you felt in that moment. So, that's a long-winded way of expressing what I'm about to say: the definition of 'elopement.'

To me, Daniel James Photography, to elope is to create a moment where you and the love of your life decide to commit yourselves to one another in marriage. NOW what looks like in reality is different for everyone! So click here to learn more!

What is Big Sur?

Big Sur is a huge swath of territory between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Cambira on the Central Coast of California. My wife and I moved here in 2014 after our honeymoon, driving down the 1 from San Francisco, and could not believe our minds. Big Sur is famous for the show-stopping coastline that stretches the entire length of highway one. Many people choose to have Big Sur as their backdrop for their wedding day due to the epic endless coasts, redwoods, and lack of civilization. The backdrops are also versatile. While planning your Big Sur elopement, it is important to keep a few things in mind.

How to get to big sur

Many will say San Jose is the closest airport but actually Monterey has an airport and it’s probably the best way to get to Big Sur if you’re not a few hours drive away already. It takes about 15 minutes to get from the car to the gate (and that was on Thanksgiving!). Yes, you will pay a tad more for a flight but it will save you a 2 - 3 hour drive from San Jose (depending on traffic) and the hassle of going through the international airport shenanigans. An alternative to San Jose is to fly into San Francisco, rent a car, and drive down the 1 through Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Yes, it will take a little longer but you are not coming to Big Sur to rush. You will experience stop-and-go traffic in Santa Cruz, so if you like me hate red lights, you might want to take the Monterey or San Jose Route 😊

Big Sur is connected to the Carmel / Monterey Peninsula “metro area” lol. I say this because Monterey County is like half the size of the city of San Jose. Anyways, I bring this up because as you begin to plan I find it helpful to know that there are amenities about 30-60 minutes away on Highway One. Whole Foods, shopping mall, Target, and Coffee are all in the Monterey Area before you get to Big Sur. Here you will also find cool car rental places such as Monterey Touring Vehicles.

Accesories like rental cars can add so much to your experience and imagry!

gENERAL PERMIT STUFF

BUT, below you will find some info on how to make your elopement happen.

FIRST, Big Sur is made of about 3 types of property: State Park, National Park, and Private Property. And each one has different procedures for booking elopements and defines elopements differently.

Public Lands and Permits

🌲For (Southern Big Sur) Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Andrew Molera State Parks you need to reach out to Melody Hildreth* with State Parks. Contact # is 831-667-0507 and e-mail is BigSurEvents@parks.ca.gov. * at time of writing

🌊 For Garrapata Beach and Garrapata. State Park (North Big Sur) you can call 831-624-3407 or email fwilson@parks.ca.gov.

Permits are from $200 - $400 at the time of writing.

For private locations such as Ventana or and Airbnb, go nuts as most are cool with whatever you want to do :)

Obtaining a permit is the responsibility of my couples 😊

Private Land

This. This is the way to go if you’re looking for easy and beautiful redwood vibes. In some cases you’re literally across the street from JO State Park and its the same setting but even better in some areas.

Main point here! No matter what your vibe and vision I can help you plan ther perfect location!

Best Places for Elopements in Big Sur

These are my favorite elopement locations in no particular order!

  1. Glenn Oaks Big Sur

  2. Garrapata State Park Overlooks

  3. Garrapata Beach (Calla Lily Valley)

  4. Ventana Big Sur

  5. Henry Miller Library

  6. AirBnB

Glenn Oaks Big Sur

First things first, shoot a message to the awesome folks at Glenn Oaks to chat about when you can make the magic happen. Picture this: saying your vows surrounded by ancient redwoods in the Redwood Grove or with the Big Sur River as your witness on the River View Deck. Now, let's sprinkle in some floral arrangements, a fantastic photographer, and any personal touches you fancy. Picture-perfect, right? The vibe is all about simplicity and spontaneity, letting the stunning scenery do its thing. So, if you're up for a romantic adventure, Glenn Oaks in Big Sur is the place to be for an elopement that's as unique as your love story. Cheers to your unforgettable celebration of love in this slice of California paradise! 🌲💕

🌊Garrapata Elopements

Garrapata State Park in Big Sur is like stepping into a dreamy, intimate haven along the California coast. First things first, sort out those permits to make it all legit. Now, picture saying your vows against the backdrop of rugged cliffs and the endless Pacific Ocean soundtrack – it's like a romantic movie, right? Don't forget to snag a local photographer to capture those Instagram-worthy moments amidst the jaw-dropping scenery. And after you've officially tied the knot, why not celebrate with a chill picnic on the beach or a stroll through the redwood-filled trails? Whether it's the morning glow or a fiery sunset, Garrapata is like nature's own wedding chapel, making it the perfect spot for a low-key and magical elopement in the heart of Big Sur's coastal beauty.

Garrapata is a huge state park and some of the red circled areas will show you what I mean by getting in the car and heading from spot to spot is how we role here :)

🌷Calla Lily Valley

Oh my goodness, let me tell you about this dreamy spot for eloping – Calla Lily Valley in Big Sur! It's like stumbling into this magical, secret garden surrounded by these gorgeous calla lilies. Picture this: you and groom to be exchanging vows amidst a sea of these beautiful white flowers – it's like a scene straight out of a movie. And the best part? It's all tucked away, so it feels like your little love haven, you know? The seasonal bloom adds this extra touch of beauty, turning the whole place into this fairytale wonderland. Plus, you've got these towering redwood trees and views of the Pacific Ocean in the background – it's like nature went all out to make your day perfect. Choosing Calla Lily Valley for your elopement is basically like getting married in the midst of a breathtaking dream, and who wouldn't want that? It's seriously the stuff of fairytales, my friend!

Keep in mind the lilies are in bloom here from December to April. I would hold your actual elopement in one of the yellow dots :)

💍Ventana Big Sur

30 Minutes south of Calla Lily Valley you will find the most epic little resort called Ventana Big Sur. It is like the ultimate elopement paradise! This place is nestled right in the heart of Big Sur, surrounded by towering redwoods and overlooking the stunning Pacific Ocean. The atmosphere is just dripping with romance and tranquility. Imagine exchanging vows on a cliffside terrace with the ocean waves crashing below – it's straight out of a dream. Ventana offers these luxurious yet intimate spaces that make you feel like you're in your own little world. And here's the kicker – the views! I'm talking about panoramic views of the coastline that are so breathtaking they'll make your heart skip a beat. The natural beauty, combined with the upscale amenities and world-class service, makes Ventana Big Sur the kind of place where your elopement isn't just a ceremony; it's an unforgettable experience. It's like getting the best of both worlds – the serenity of nature and the comfort of a top-notch venue. Trust me, it's a no-brainer for anyone looking to make their elopement absolutely magical!

On the propety you can have access to a number of great elopment sites such as:

Sur Vista - it's like this super romantic outdoor terrace where you can exchange your vows. It's seriously tucked away in the most dreamy setting. They nailed the name because you get these sweeping views of the stunning blue Pacific Ocean. And get this – it's perfect for around seventy of your closest pals to join in celebrating your big day.

Ocean Meadow Lawn - Right smack in the middle of the resort, near the Social House and the pool, there's this massive 7,000 square-foot well-kept lawn. It's seriously something else because you get these amazing views of the forest and the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean. And get this – it's big enough for up to 200 guests

Sky Terrrace - It's got this elevated and secluded space that gives you killer views of the ocean, meadow, and redwoods. Plus, the food is next level – our chef's hooking us up with personalized, top-notch meals for you and all the guests. It's gonna be epic!- here is a 360 view from Ventana

Right now their elopement packages begin at $7,800.

Henry Miller Library

The place is so secluded and serene, making it perfect for a private and romantic exchange of vows. Plus, the whole bohemian vibe of the library adds this cool, artistic touch. And get this – it's tied to the legendary writer Henry Miller, giving it this extra literary flair. I can totally imagine saying "I do" there, with nature as the witness and all that rustic charm or terrace venue is exclusively dedicated to exchanging of vows. Aptly named for its sweeping views of the breathtaking blue Pacific Ocean, Sur Vista comfortably accommodates up to seventy guests in celebration of your most special day.

Henry Miller has a great outdoor space for reception setting but the real draw is behind the library in the redwood grove.

Best Places to Stay in Big Sur

My Favorite places to stay in Big Sur! I’m thinking, of location, amenities, and over all experience.

  1. Carmel Highlands Hyatt

This place is perfect to me. You are 5-30 minutes from major Big Sur hikes, beaches, and locations for your elopement. You have ocean views from your balcony. The hotel feels epic. The restaurant, nothing crazy, does have amazing views of the ocean and is one of our favorite place to do breakfast. Plus you get these cute little fire pits all over the hotel to use.

Here is a link to the Highlands Website

Price for rooms ranges from $450 -$900

    2.Airbnb

If you are planning ahead of time you can find amazing AirBnBs. There are so many not a single one stands out but I would recommend to find with view of the ocean as this can also serve as your vow exchange area if its great. Some even have beach access. This is number two as most of couples find this to be most exciting.\

Here is an awesome AirBnB stay

Price for rooms ranges from $1,000-$2,00 for something near the ocean

  2. Post Ranch inn

Hands down most luxurious experience in Monterey County and possibly up there on a world-class top 5. Looking for more than a hike? This place a spa that is epic beyond explanation as well as access to the best of Big Sur and can even serve as the backdrop for your elopement. Call them at (831) 667-2200.

Here is the link to Post Ranch

Price for rooms begin at $2,300

  3. GLENN OAKS BIG SUR

Glenn Oaks Big Sur is not just a great place to hold your elopement but a perfect spot to stay if you’re into glamping. Under the redwoods is this cute little creekside glamping site. This place is located on both sides of HWY 1. If you’re into the moody redwoods covering you during your stay I suggest looking into the creekside or West side of the hwy.

Here is the link to Glenn Oaks Big Sur

Price for rooms ranges from $250-350

  4. Ventana (Glamping)

This is another great spot for your Big Sur Elopement stay. Here I would definitely suggest the glamping sites as they are not only easier to serve as aback drop during your getting ready stages of the elopement but you get more room. The gaming sites here are pretty famous for being “on top of each other”. Something else that is unique here is their turn-down service with hot cocoa.

Here is a link to Ventana Glamping in Big Sur

Price for rooms ranges from $80-$200

  5. Ventana resort

Epic and romantic. Connected to the glamping site through redwood grove trail this resort offers some amazing amenities such Sur House - an amazing restaurant as well as a spa and cool experiences such as knife crafting, star gazing, bee tours!

Here is a link to Ventana Resort in Big Sur

Price for rooms ranges from $1800-$2800

  6. Treebones Resort

Treebones is epic. No place like this around. Essentially this resort is a glamping style stay with yurts and treehouses as your room style. This place is popular so check in sooner than later and is located in southern Big Sur closer to Ragged Point and San Simeon.

Here is a link to the Treebones Resort

Price for rooms ranges from $90 - $400

✅Amazing Place to Stay

What is the weather like in big sur?

The weather in Big Sur is either your vibe or it aint. It is super important to know what you’re coming to. During your research you are going to see 80% more sunny Big Sur images than foggy ones. Do not be fooled. In general you can count on fog in Big Sur in the evening and morning from April - September. Don’t get me wrong! I don’t want to sound like that’s a bad thing at all, its the reason my wife and I moved here after our honeymoon! If youre coming from Texas in July you will be absolutely stoked to find out you’ll need a jacket here.

1. Mild Summers: 🌞Summers are typically mild and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit (around 18-24°C). The evenings can get cooler, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea. This is the season we get the most fog. Days will clear up[ around 10 am and the “spaceship” which is what we call it, rolls in around 4-6pm.

2. Cool Winters: 🌊Winters are cool but not extremely cold. Daytime temperatures usually range from the mid-50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit (around 13-18°C). Nights can be chilly, dropping into the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit (around 1-9°C). This is the season you are most likely to have sunny sunsets as well as rain. But don’t worry, it rains here about 2x a month in the winter and it last for 1-3 days.*

3. Rainy Season: 🌧The rainy season occurs during the winter months, from November to March. During this period, you can expect occasional rain showers. The landscape becomes lush and green during this time.

4. Fog:🌁 Coastal fog is common, especially in the mornings and evenings. It can create a mystical atmosphere but might limit visibility at times. it can be high in the sky or it can be so dense that your hair gets wet.

5. Spring and Fall:🌞Spring and fall are transitional seasons with moderate temperatures. Spring is when wildflowers bloom, adding vibrant colors to the landscape. In March / April the poppies and lilies bloom and the grass is green. Absolutely stunning. In the fall you get the gorgeous earthy backdrop and the best sunsets.

*Keep in mind that microclimates exist. It can be raining and cloudy in Monterey and bright and sunny in Big Sur. Also, it is usually going to be sunny in big Sur over Monterey.

Bring a jacket just in case all times of year.

What is there to do in Big Sur?

Click here for an entire in depth blog post on the subject but here are my 🤗 favorite activities as a local.

First, explore. Fly in from SF, rent a Porsche and take HWY 17 to HWY 1. Stop in Santa Cruz for lunch and coffee and coninue your journey to Big Sur. Hit up Monterey on the way in, explore Pacific Grove, and head to your stay in Big Sur. The journey down is an event in itself to me.

While in Big Sur you must hike. Garrapata has epic, steep, legit workout hikes with breathtaking views of the ocean that can take out 3-6 hours. You also have coastal strolls here on the west side of the highway. Other great hikes include Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Limekiln. All have huge hike options with redwoods and coastal views.

The beaches here are *muah. Chefs kiss. Def need to see Pfeiffer beach, Calla Lily Valley (spring), and do the 5 minute walk to McWay Falls.

You might already have tons of ideas but I’ll leave you with my last favorite activity. Grab a blanket, grab a bottle of champagne, like good stuff, head to Soberanes Point (with jackets) sit - drink- watch whale in the sunset. SO CRAZY.

Visit Carmel-by-the-Sea. Carmel is this storybook cute little town literally, by the sea. This is like a 3 hour visit. You can eat the best food in the Monterey Bay Area and entire central coast. Drink great wine. And just site see! The Carmel Mission is definitely worth the visit, if you’re at all into history like I am.
