👉Garrapata state park
So, if you're thinking of popping the question in Big Sur, Garrapata State Park is a seriously dreamy spot. A stunning coastal views, rugged cliffs, and a tranquil atmosphere that's a bit less crowded than some other places in Big Sur. You've got a mix of landscapes to choose from, like meadows and redwood groves, making it super versatile for creating a magical moment. 💍Plus, there's a chance to go on a sweet hike together before the big ask. And, oh, the sunsets there are legendary—imagine proposing as the sun dips below the Pacific Ocean. Garrapata is not just about the scenery; it's also home to diverse wildlife and beautiful flora, adding a natural touch to the whole experience. Trust me, it's a perfect setup for a memorable proposal, with great photo ops to capture the moment. Just be sure to check for any updates and respect the park rules. Good luck, and may your Big Sur proposal be as epic as the views! 🌅
👉Garrapata Beach
So, if you're thinking of proposing in Big Sur, Garrapata Beach is another gem. A beautiful, sandy shoreline with waves crashing against the rocks and rugged cliffs in the background.💑 It's got this raw, natural beauty that's perfect for a romantic moment. The beach is a bit more secluded than some other spots, giving you a more intimate setting. You can take a leisurely stroll along the shore, and there are these cool rock formations that can add a unique touch to your proposal spot. The sound of the ocean and the overall tranquility of Garrapata Beach create a really serene atmosphere. 💍And, of course, you can time it for sunset—the view is absolutely breathtaking. Just imagine proposing with the sun setting over the Pacific. It's a spot that offers a different kind of coastal magic. So, if you're into the idea of a beach proposal with a touch of wild beauty, Garrapata Beach is definitely worth checking out. Good luck, and here's to a picture-perfect proposal! 🌊
👉Glenn Oaks Big Sur
if you're scouting a Big Sur proposal spot, Glenn Oaks should be on your radar. A charming blend of rustic cabins nestled in a grove of towering redwoods. It's got this cozy, intimate vibe that sets the stage for a super romantic proposal. The cabins are surrounded by nature, providing a serene and private atmosphere. You can opt for a cabin with a fireplace for that extra touch of coziness. Plus, there's a picturesque creek running through the property, adding a tranquil soundtrack to your moment. It's a bit different from the coastal scenes but equally enchanting. And the best part? You're still in the heart of Big Sur's natural beauty.🌲Think about proposing under the towering redwoods or by the creek—it's all very dreamy. So, if you're into the idea of a more secluded, woodland proposal with a touch of rustic charm, Glenn Oaks is definitely worth considering. Best of luck, and here's to your Big Sur engagement surrounded by nature's beauty!
👉Carmel Beach
If you're envisioning a Big Sur proposal, Carmel Beach is an absolute gem. A pristine, white sandy beach with turquoise waters, framed by cypress trees and stunning coastal views. It's got this classic California beauty that's perfect for a romantic moment. Carmel Beach offers a more classic and timeless setting compared to some of the rugged cliffs in Big Sur. The beach has a relaxed vibe, and you can take a leisurely stroll along the shore or even set up a cozy spot on the sand for the big ask. 🌊The sound of the waves and the salty breeze add to the overall charm. Plus, Carmel is known for its artistic community, so you might even catch a beautiful sunset painting the sky with warm hues. If you're into the idea of a classic beach proposal with a touch of coastal elegance, Carmel Beach is an ideal spot. Best of luck, and may your Big Sur engagement be as beautiful as the beach itself!
👉Monastery Beach
Monastery Beach is a hidden treasure worth considering. Picture this: a secluded cove with golden sands, rugged cliffs, and the soothing melody of waves crashing against the shore. It's got this serene and intimate vibe that sets the stage for a truly romantic moment. Monastery Beach is known for its dramatic scenery, and the absence of crowds makes it feel like your own private paradise. You can choose a spot along the shoreline or on the rocks for a unique backdrop to your proposal. The views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding landscape are nothing short of breathtaking. Timing your proposal with the sunset can add an extra touch of magic as the sky transforms into a canvas of warm colors. If you're into the idea of a secluded and picturesque coastal proposal with a touch of drama, Monastery Beach is an ideal choice. Best of luck, and may your Big Sur engagement be filled with the beauty of nature and love!
👉Pfeiffer Beach
A unique stretch of sandy coastline with famous purple-hued sands, massive rock formations, and the mesmerizing beauty of the Pacific Ocean. It's got this surreal and magical quality that makes it an ideal spot for a romantic moment. Pfeiffer Beach is renowned for its iconic Keyhole Arch, which frames the sunset in a truly spectacular way. The rugged beauty of the cliffs and the distinct purple sands add a touch of otherworldliness to your proposal. The beach is somewhat secluded, creating an intimate atmosphere for your special moment. Imagine proposing against the backdrop of the setting sun, with the waves crashing against the rocks—it's a scene straight out of a fairytale. If you're into the idea of a unique and enchanting coastal proposal with a dash of natural wonder, Pfeiffer Beach is an absolute gem. Best of luck, and may your Big Sur engagement be as extraordinary as this magical beach!
Big Sur Weather
Summer (June to August): Summers in Big Sur are often characterized by mild to warm temperatures. Daytime highs can range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit (18-30°C). It's the driest season, with limited rainfall. Fog is a common occurrence, especially in the mornings and evenings, and can have a cooling effect.
Fall (September to November): Fall sees a gradual cooling of temperatures. Daytime highs may range from the mid-60s to the low 80s Fahrenheit (18-27°C). Nights can be cooler. Fall is generally considered a pleasant time to visit, with fewer crowds and still relatively dry conditions.
Winter (December to February): Winters in Big Sur are mild, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-50s to the mid-60s Fahrenheit (13-20°C). Nights can be cooler, and rainfall increases during this season. Winter storms can bring rain and occasional chilly temperatures.
Spring (March to May): Spring is a transition period, with gradually warming temperatures. Daytime highs may range from the mid-60s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit (18-24°C). Spring is also a time when the landscape becomes lush and green due to increased rainfall.
It's important to note that microclimates can exist in different parts of Big Sur, and conditions may vary depending on the specific location and elevation. Visitors are advised to check the weather forecast before traveling and be prepared for some variability, especially given the coastal and topographical features of the region. Additionally, evenings and nights can be cooler, so bringing layers is often a good idea, regardless of the season.
Lighting in Big Sur
Golden Hour- 1 hour before sunset
You and your significant other, standing on the rugged cliffs of Big Sur during the golden hour. The sun is slowly making its way down, casting this warm, golden glow on the waves crashing against the rocks below. It's the perfect backdrop for that once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Now, imagine you're about to pop the question during this magical time. The soft, dreamy light of the golden hour is turning everything into a masterpiece, making that special moment even more enchanting. It's like nature is giving your proposal a cinematic touch, turning it into a scene straight out of a romantic movie.
So, there you are, surrounded by the beauty of Big Sur, bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun, creating memories that will last a lifetime. It's not just a proposal; it's a golden hour proposal – a moment wrapped in warmth, bathed in beauty, and etched in golden light. Epic.
Blue Hour - 20-30 minutes after sunset
That magical time after the sun sets or before it rises when everything turns this cool, deep blue? That's what we call the "blue hour" in photography. It's like nature's way of giving the sky this calming, serene vibe.
During the blue hour, the sky is this gorgeous shade of blue, and the light is soft and diffused. It's perfect for taking photos because it brings out details and eliminates those harsh shadows. Imagine capturing a cityscape or a landscape with that cool, moody backdrop – it just adds this extra touch of beauty.
How does fog effect your light?
Believe it or not, fog can be a great friend. With fog we can get warm skin tones and even light! It is less dymanic than a golden hour sunset but to be honest this is the reason my wife and I move to the area. To me fog give a nice cozy atmosphere to your photos. One thing to know is that Big Sur is obviously coast, so you will get coastal fog most certainly from March to late September around early morning and then it will return around sunset. If there is fog on your proposal day I would suggest moving your proposal time up an hour.
What if it rains?
Since 2017 I have shot over 100 proposals and 3 have been in the rain.
I would not worry to much about it as California gets like no rain, BUT there is a chance that if your December - February proposal has rain on the schedule you might need a backup to feel comfortable!
Options include:
Going with it
Like mentioned, I have shot 3 proposals in the rain and if that’s your vibe I am all game! This might affect your picnic set up if you wish to go that route!
Changing Locations
If you are staying at a hotel like Carmel Highlands you can easily use the patio for the moment and capture other images on property. OR if you’re staying in Carmel a building like this might serve as a great covered backdrop!
Reschedule
If you’re in town for a few days we can totally reschedule if the day is clear on a following day and if my schedule allows. Lastly, if the sun is better the day of at a different part of the day we can reschedule the time as weather can move fast here and if my schedule allows.
Big Sur Proposal Timeline Idea
4:50 - Daniel Arrive early to the Google Maps Pin Drop
5:00- Proposal / left alone to be together and experience the moment
5:15 - Complete photos at the spot / Jump in the car for a second location
