Garrapata Elopement From a Local's Perspective

A Local’s Perspective

Big Sur is more than a destination, it’s an experience. And if you're dreaming of an elopement that feels wild, intimate, and breathtakingly beautiful, Garrapata State Park might just be your perfect match.

Hi, I’m Daniel—a local Big Sur elopement photographer who’s been capturing love stories along this rugged coastline since 2018. I know every trail, tide, and golden-hour glow this park has to offer. This isn’t just a location I work in—it’s a place I know by heart.

What makes Garrapata so special for eloping couples? It’s that rare mix of drama and serenity. Towering cliffs meet crashing waves. Hidden trails lead to quiet beaches. Wildflowers bloom freely in spring. It’s raw, real, and unforgettable—just like the best love stories. If you're looking for a place that feels both wildly cinematic and deeply personal, Garrapata delivers.

Why Choose Garrapata State Park for Your Elopement?

When it comes to elopement locations, Garrapata State Park checks every box—and then some.

Let’s start with the views. Picture this: iconic Big Sur cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and the Pacific Ocean stretching endlessly into the horizon. It’s the kind of backdrop that doesn’t just look amazing in photos—it makes you feel something the moment you arrive.

But here’s the real magic— unlike many other Big Sur locations, Garrapata offers all that epic beauty without the need for a long, strenuous hike. You can pull off Highway 1 and be steps away from a jaw-dropping ceremony spot. It’s private enough to feel intimate, yet accessible enough to keep things simple and stress-free.

Need variety for your gallery? This spot delivers. You’ve got windswept cliffs, tucked-away beaches, lush redwood trails, and wildflower blooms depending on the season. It’s like four locations in one.

And the best part? Garrapata is beautiful year-round. Whether you’re chasing a sun-drenched summer elopement or leaning into the moody, misty vibes of winter, this park brings a unique kind of magic no matter the season.

Best Photo Spots in Garrapata (From a Local's Lens)

After years of photographing elopements in Big Sur, I’ve found the sweet spots—the ones that take your breath away in person and look incredible in your final gallery. Garrapata is full of hidden gems, and here are a few of my absolute favorites:

Bluff Trail Overlooking the Pacific
This trail offers some of the most dramatic cliffside views in Big Sur, and it’s just steps from the highway. It’s perfect for golden hour vows or windswept portraits with crashing waves as your backdrop.

Soberanes Point’s Rugged Rock Formations
Soberanes Point is pure coastal drama. Jagged rocks jut out into the ocean, and the light here is unreal, especially at sunrise or sunset. It’s one of the most iconic spots in Garrapata—and for good reason.

Hidden Beach Coves at Low Tide
If you’re up for a bit of timing, some of Garrapata’s secret coves reveal themselves during low tide. These tucked-away spots offer privacy, soft sand, and a romantic, adventurous vibe.

Seasonal Wildflower Fields
Spring brings bursts of color to the coastal bluffs—think vibrant yellows, purples, and pinks. It’s the perfect natural accent for a carefree, bohemian elopement look.

Redwood Groves on the Inland Trail
Yes, Garrapata has redwoods too—but here’s the catch: many of them are tucked inside the gated areas of the state park or on nearby private property (like a forested Airbnb). You’ll need a permit—or the right kind of lodging—to access these spaces legally and responsibly. But if you're dreaming of that misty, magical redwood vibe, I can help guide you to the best options.

When to Elope Here: Seasons and Lighting Tips

One of the best things about Garrapata State Park? There’s no bad time to elope here. Seriously—every season brings its own kind of magic.

Spring (March–May) offers fresh wildflowers, lush greenery, and cooler temps. If you're looking for privacy and soft light, I always recommend the last week of April through May. The Big Sur Marathon has passed, spring break is over, and crowds are low, plus the landscape is still glowing with that post-rain vibrancy.

Summer (June–August) can be busier, especially midday, but early mornings and sunsets still offer pockets of peace. You might get a little more fog, but don’t worry,  as someone from Southern California or If it is July and the whole country is burning, fog here isn’t a flaw; it’s a feature. It brings a dreamy, moody vibe that looks absolutely stunning in photos.

Fall (September–October) is a photographer’s dream. The weather is warm, the light is golden, and October kicks off the most reliable stretch for epic Big Sur sunsets. The orange and reddish foliage adds to the scenery.

Winter (November–March) tends to be quieter and offers high chances of fiery skies at dusk. Yes, there's a bit more weather variability, but if you're open to a little adventure, it can be unbelievably romantic.

And let’s not forget: golden hour at Garrapata, especially on the cliffs, is the stuff elopement dreams are made of. Whether the sun’s peeking through coastal clouds or setting in a blaze of color, it’s always worth planning your timeline around.

Elopement Tips for Garrapata State Park

Planning your elopement at Garrapata State Park? Here’s what you need to know to make your day seamless and unforgettable.

Permit Information & Leave No Trace

To hold an elopement ceremony at Garrapata State Park, a Special Event Permit is required. The permit fee is typically $400 for up to 25 guests, with additional administrative fees. It's advisable to apply at least 60 days in advance to avoid rush fees .

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, contact the park directly at 831-624-3407 or email the Special Events Coordinator at fwilson@parks.ca.gov .

As a steward of this beautiful land, I emphasize the importance of Leave No Trace principles. This means staying on designated trails, refraining from picking plants, and ensuring all trash is packed out. Let's work together to preserve Garrapata's natural beauty for generations to come.

Accessibility & Parking

Garrapata doesn't have a traditional entrance or visitor center. Instead, you'll find 19 numbered turnouts along Highway 1, all on the ocean side. Key access points include:

  • Gate 8: Access to Soberanes Canyon Trail

  • Gates 9 & 10: Access to Soberanes Point

  • Gates 18 & 19: Access to Garrapata Beach

Parking is free but limited, so arriving early, especially on weekends and holidays, is recommended .

Please note that accessibility is limited; trails and beach access often involve uneven terrain. It's advisable to check current conditions and accessibility information on the official California State Parks website or contact park officials ahead of your visit

Nearby Accommodations & Dining Recommendations

Whether you're seeking luxury or rustic charm, the area surrounding Garrapata offers a variety of accommodations:

Hotels:

Airbnbs:

  • There are tons of AirBnB’s in Big Sur, some literally on the edge of the coast. I recommend doing a map search and spending the extra $400 to secure the perfect spot. Hear me out. You pay the extra $300-500 but if the spot has coast access you do not need to pay for any permits. BAM. And you might get redwoods. On top of all that. The architecture of some of these properties are amazing so you are getting that as a back drop for some of your elopement images as well as Garrapata!

For dining, consider these local favorites:

  • Chez Noir or Aubergine the restaurant at L'Auberge Carmel for a Michelin star experience

  • Nepenthe, Sierra Mar, or Sur House for that Big Sur view

  • Jacks on Pebble Beach, Mission Ranch or a more casual but still great experience and food

Weather Considerations & What to Bring

Garrapata's coastal climate is moderate year-round, with temperatures typically ranging from 50–65°F. However, weather can be unpredictable, with cool, foggy mornings, strong onshore winds, and hot summer days in the backcountry .

What to pack:

  • Layered clothing: To adapt to changing temperatures.

  • Comfortable footwear: For navigating uneven terrain.

  • Blankets or shawls: To stay warm during cooler moments.

  • Sunscreen and hats: Even on overcast days, UV rays can be strong.

  • Water and snacks: Facilities are limited within the park.

Remember, the key to a successful elopement at Garrapata is preparation. With the right planning, you can focus on what truly matters, celebrating your love amidst one of California's most stunning landscapes.
